Huskies top Redhawks 2-0

SEATTLE - Washington used goals from freshman Dylan Tucker-Gangnes and redshirt-freshman Jamie Finch to shutout Seattle University, 2-0, in a men's soccer exhibition contest at Husky Soccer Field, Friday evening.

After a scoreless first-half, the Huskies put up both of their goals in the second period, the first by Tucker-Gangnes (Bainbridge Island, Wash.) in the 54th minute and the second by Finch (Bothell, Wash.) in the 86th minute.

The contest is the first of two exhibitions the Huskies will play before their official season opener versus Fairleigh Dickinson in the first round of the Nike Portland Invitational, Aug. 29.

It was a pair of true freshmen making their Husky debuts who teamed up to net the first UW goal, as freshman Casey McCool (Bend, Ore.) served a cross from the right side of the box which was headed by Tucker-Gangnes into the net past Redhawk goalkeeper Emerson DeOliveira.

Just over 30 minutes later, the Huskies sealed the win when junior midfielder Taylor Cochran (Snohomish, Wash.) dished the ball to Finch on the left wing who then nailed a shot across the box into the goal.

Sophomore Stephen Fung (Honolulu, Hawaii) and junior Rylan Hawkins (Shoreline, Wash.) shared time in goal to combine for the shutout. Fung tallied three saves, all in the first half. The contest marked the fall debut for Hawkins, who after starting the first four games last season missed the rest of the year due to injury.
UW freshman Brent Richards (Camas, Wash.) led the Huskies on the attack with four shots, all in the first half. Senior midfielder Raphael Cox (Tacoma, Wash.) added three shots.

The Huskies will next host the Seattle Sounders in their final exhibition tune-up on Wednesday, Aug. 27, at 7 p.m. Admission to the match is free.

Huskies host Redhawks tonight at UW

The University of Washington Huskies Men's soccer club hosts the Seattle University Redhawks in a crosstown match tonight at 7:00 PM at Husky Soccer Field. Follow the match live via this gametracker page.

The two clubs met this spring in a taste of what could become a great intercity Division One rivalry.

The Redhawks are in a transitional season and without a conference as they make the jump to NCAA Division One. Seattle U have only a few home matches, including a friendly against the Sounders next Tuesday at 3:00 PM at Championship Field on the SU campus.

The Huskies were recently tabbed to finish fourth in the 6-team "Pac-10." They also had their 2008 recruiting class voted the 32nd-best in the country.

Many Tacoma Tide players are set to play, including Jordan Jennings in goal for Seattle University and Beau Macaluso at forward for the UW.

Both the Huskies and Redhawks will play the Seattle Sounders next week in exhibition friendlies. Seattle University hosts the Sounders at Championship Field next Tuesday August 26 at 3:00 PM. The next night (Wednesday the 27th) the Huskies host the Sounders at 7:00 PM at Husky Soccer Field.

SEATTLE - The Washington men's and women's soccer programs will hold a joint alumni barbecue, Sunday, Sept. 28, at 1:30 p.m. at Husky Ballpark. The gathering will be held during the break between the Husky men's and women's doubleheader, on the grass area outside the stadium, down the first base line.

The event is free and open to all Husky soccer alumni. The Washington women's soccer squad will kick off the doubleheader hosting Hawai'i at noon at Husky Soccer Field, with the men's contest with Gonzaga to follow at 2:30 p.m.

Cox strikes a goal.

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - Washington senior midfielder Raphael Cox was named the Pac-10 Men's Soccer Player of the Week for Sept. 16-22, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.

Cox was instrumental in the Huskies' 3-2 overtime victory against No. 24 New Mexico to win the Husky Fever Classic on Sunday. The victory also gave head coach Dean Wurzberger his 200th win at Washington. The Tacoma, Wash., helped the Huskies come back from a two-goal deficit against the Lobos, scoring the equalizing goal in the 79th minute and the gamewinner in the 98th minute. It was the first multiple-goal effort for Cox who earned All-Pac-10 second-team acclaim last season.

The UW Daily student newspaper has a feature on the Husky Men: Men’s soccer hopes to ride old and new to victories.

Already making a mark with the team is freshman forward Brent Richards from Camas, Wash. He is a regular starter and has led the team in shots on multiple occasions including, most recently, the Husky Fever Classic in which the Huskies were victorious.

Playing alongside Richards is another rookie, midfielder Dylan Tucker-Gangnes, a product of Bainbridge Island.

“The two freshmen up front are doing very well,” Washington coach Dean Wurzberger said. “You can’t pile heaps of expectations on a freshman but [Brent] is doing ever so well and so is his playing partner Dylan. We’re happy that they’re as far along as they are.”

SEATTLE - Senior midfielder Raphael Cox helped Washington mount a late comeback over No. 24 New Mexico, scoring both the equalizer in the 79th minute and the overtime game winner in the 98th minute as the Huskies defeated the Lobos, 3-2, in the final round of the Husky Classic, Sunday.

With the victory, Washington (4-3-0) won its 12th Husky Classic title in the 20-year history of the tournament. The Huskies opened tournament play Friday with a 1-0 win over Cal State Fullerton. The victory also marked Dean Wurzberger's 200th win as the head coach of the Huskies.

Washington fell behind early on a pair of quick goals from New Mexico's P.J. Wilson and Michael Green in the 11th and 18th minutes. But the Lobos (3-3-2) were forced to play the last 21 minutes of regulation two men down due to a pair of red card ejections. The Huskies proceeded to capitalize on their advantage with three unanswered goals. Junior defender Taylor Hoss and Cox scored a pair of goals within four-minute span to equalize in the 75th and 79th minutes. Then it was Cox who netted the overtime gamewinner at 97:40.

Round-up: The Washington Women finally lost their first match, 3-0 at Illinois. The Seattle University Men lost 2-1 in San Jose. The SU Women drew their home opener before a capacity crowd 1-1 with Portland State. The 4th ranked Seattle Pacific Women went up to Bellingham and lost to 22nd ranked Western 1-0.

Sounders FC Match Highlights Spring Slate For Washinton Huskies Men's Soccer

SEATTLE - (courtesy of GoHuskies.com) Washington men's soccer kicked off its 2009 spring season this week, an exhibition slate that is highlighted by two home matches at Husky Soccer Field and a tilt with Seattle Sounders FC at the Starfire Sports Complex in Tukwila on April 21.

The Huskies began the spring campaign on Friday, March 6, hosting the University of British Columbia at Husky Soccer Field. (Result not yet reported)

Washington will then play the bulk of its schedule in April, starting with a trip to Portland to face the rival Pilots on Saturday, April 4, at 2 p.m. at Merlo Field. UW will return to Montlake to host Seattle University at Husky Soccer Field on Friday, April 10, at 6 p.m.

UW will battle Seattle's new Major League Soccer side on Tuesday, April 21 at the Starfire Sports Complex. The match will start at 10 a.m.

The Huskies will wrap their spring schedule traveling to Spokane to face Gonzaga on Saturday, April 25 at 2 p.m., before facing Seattle Pacific at Interbay Stadium on Friday, May 1, at 7 p.m.

Washington is coming off a 2008 season during which it posted an 8-8-2 overall record and finished in a tie for fourth in the Pac-10 standings with a 3-5-2 league record.

College Round-up: Husky Women finish strong, Western sweeps GNAC

SEATTLE - Despite playing the final 50 minutes a player down and the entire match without its head coach, the Washington Huskies used goals by junior Veronica Perez and freshman Kate Deines, and held off a late rally by Arizona, to win their final regular-season match, 2-1, Sunday at Husky Soccer Field.

UW finishes the regular-season on a six-game unbeaten streak, improving to 14-5-1 overall and 5-3-1 in Pac-10 play, and finishing tied for the third in the Pac-10. The 14 wins mark UW's third-highest win total in school history and mark its most victories in a season since earning 17 in 2004. UW will find out its postseason fate on Monday at 5 p.m., but are almost assured its first postseason berth since 2004. Read the entire match recap here.

BERKELEY, Calif. - After going up 1-0, Washington gave up two unanswered goals including the gamewinner in the 88th minute, falling to No. 14/25 California, 2-1, in Pac-10 men's soccer action at Edwards Stadium, Sunday afternoon.

Cal senior midfielder Pat Marion netted the gamewinning score with just two minutes remaining in regulation to lift the Golden Bears to the victory. The Huskies had been playing the final 54 minutes a man down after junior defender Casey Cunningham was issued a red card in the 36th minute, an ejection that occurred after Cal came back to tie the score 1-1.

UW freshman forward Dylan Tucker-Gangnes gave the Huskies an early lead in the 26th minute with his third goal of the season, only to have that answered by Cal sophomore forward Andrew Wiedeman nine minutes later.

The loss was the second-straight and third in the last four games for Washington, which fell to 8-7-2 overall and 3-4-2 in Pac-10 play. Cal improved to 9-3-5 and 4-2-3 in league action. SEATTLE - On Senior Day, fourth-year players Megan Price (Federal Way, Wash.) and Kahlyn Keilty-Lucas (Minneapolis, Minn.) figured into the scoring as Seattle University scored three first-half goals on its way to a 3-1 victory over Saint Martin’s in women’s soccer action Sunday afternoon on a muddy Championship Field.

The Seattle University women’s soccer team finishes the 2008 season with a 12-5-3 record, including a 10-5-3 mark against Division I schools, defeating teams from the West Coast Conference, the Western Athletic Conference, the Big Sky Conference, and the Summit League. The top four scorers from this season (Coe, Kuttler, Riozzi, Bloecker) are eligible to return next season, as are three members of the starting defense (Kate Edstrom, Nance Hill, Jordan Salisbury) and Goverde, who played every second of every match in net for the Redhawks in 2008.

BELLINGHAM - The Western men’s soccer team won their second Great Northwest Athletic Conference title in school history.

Thursday with a 6-0 win against Saint Martin’s University at Whatcom Community College’s Orca Field.
Western senior forward Samir Vejo led the Vikings’ attack with three goals as four different players scored in the second half.

“Winning the conference is a massive accomplishment,” Western head coach Travis Connell said. “I am extremely proud and I know the guys are too.”

Western, which was 5-0-1 in its last six games, improved its overall record to 10-5-3 and 6-0-1 within the conference. Read the rest here.

BELLINGHAM -The Western women’s soccer team tied Saint Martin’s University 1-1 on Thursday at Whatcom Community College’s Orca Field.

The tie continues the Vikings' 14-game unbeaten streak.

The last unbeaten streak consisted of 38 games in a row, which took place from 1982 to 1984.

With an overall record of 15-2-2 and 9-0-2 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference, the Vikings are ranked 15th in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America/National Collegiate Athletic Association Division II Coaches Poll and first in the Far West Region. Read the rest here.

Huskies nip CSFU 1-0

SEATTLE - Senior midfielder George John scored a goal in the 87th minute, lifting the Washington men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Cal State Fullerton in the opening round of the 20th annual Husky Fever Classic at Husky Soccer Field, Friday evening.

John headed a free kick served by senior midfielder Josh Swett from the left corner of the field into the goal at the 86:32 mark. The score broke a scoreless tie and lifted the Huskies to their third win in four matches. Swett, a transfer from Manhatten College, came in as a second-half sub and notched his first assist as a Husky.

The match was the official home debut for the Huskies (3-3-0) who opened the season with five-straight road games. The loss dropped Cal State Fullerton to 2-5-0. New Mexico (3-2-2) and Portland (2-2-2) battled to a 1-1 double overtime draw in the tournament's first game, Friday.

"Fullerton is not an easy opponent, so I'm very pleased with the result," UW head coach Dean Wurzberger said. "I think we deserved to win, although it looked like it would go into overtime. I'm delighted. It gives us a chance to turn our season back in the win column."

For a supposed professional 'off season,' we sure have had lots of news to share regarding the Seattle soccer scene lately.

Yesterday Sounders FC announced that they will be holding public open tryouts in three Washington cities in November. Further, they will be videoing the tryouts for a reality TV show that will end with a live session after the Superbowl where Sounders fans will help choose a player for the club roster! The current United Soccer Leagues Sounders continue their tour of Argentina. The latest blog posted about the trip gives praise to Argentine coffee, beef, and futbol passion. Read the blog here.

The Washington Huskies men and women have big matches this weekend. Tonight at Husky Soccer Field the men host UCLA. On Sunday they host San Diego State. They will be without star midfielder George John, though. The UW Daily previews the men's weekend. The women travel to Oregon for two matches. The UW Daily looks at the challenges the women face.

Fung’s laid-back attitude stems from having growing up playing soccer in Hawaii.

“The team I played for started me out as a forward and I sucked at it,” said Fung. “I wasn’t really athletic ... [and] I was a clumsy kid so I got stuck at goal.”

He might not have fully realized his potential as a goalkeeper at first, since he began tending the net at only eight years of age, but he has developed into one of the team’s greatest assets today.

“Stephen’s very strong at shot stopping as well as his play along the line,” said Washington coach Dean Wurzberger, “So we’re very confident.”

College Round-up: Huskies invited to MLS Combine

There is news coming from the University of Washington Men's soccer program. George John and Raphael Cox have been invited to the MLS scouting combine in January (see complete list here). John recently won the Pac-10's Soccer Scholar Athlete of the Year award. Former Huskies Craig Waibel, Mike Chabala and Ely Allen (all in Major League Soccer) will participate in the Husky Winter Soccer Camp December 26-28.

College Round-up: Late goal gets tie for Dawgs

The University of Washington Huskies scored a goal in the 72nd minute on a header from defender Casey Cunningham and went on to draw tenth-ranked California 2-2 Sunday at Husky Soccer Field. On Friday UW edged Stanford 1-0.

College Round-up: UW Women remain unbeaten

PORTLAND, Ore. - Junior Veronica Perez scored her sixth goal of the season in the 56th minute and added an assist, giving the Washington women's soccer team a 3-1 victory over Northern Arizona Sunday on the final day of the Portland Nike Invitational at Merlo Field.

The victory gives the Huskies a 6-0-0 record this season, tied for the second-best start in program history. The 2000 team, which went on to win the program's only Pac-10 title, also started 6-0-0, while the 2004 team, which went on to make an Elite Eight run, started 8-0-0.

The Huskies shut out San Diego State 2-0 on Friday.

The Seattle University Redhawks Men continue to pick off NCAA Division One foes as they journey around the country. In Florida the Redhawks beat Gulf Coast 2-1 on Friday and then went double overtime the next day to edge Florida Atlantic 2-1 on a clinching goal by sophomore Wesley Van Hooser. The Redhawks are now 5-0 against D1 opposition.

The Seattle Pacific Falcon Men went 1-1-1 last week with a 1-1 draw at San Francisco State, a 3-0 win at Colorado Christian and a 4-1 loss at Metro State.

The Seattle Pacific Women beat Cal State Monterey Bay and then drubbed Notre Dame de Namur.

Redhawks, Huskies, Falcons announce new recruits

Seattle University, the University of Washington and Seattle Pacific University have all recently released their lists of new soccer recruits.

For the men, the SU Redhawks welcome Troy Bratten, John Pegg and Bobby Segal. The Huskies have added Quinton Beasely, Ryan Moore, and Will Pleskow, among others. The Falcons captured seven players including Zach Johnson, Chris Morris and Charlie Piehler.

For the women, Seattle University has signed Taylor Bolibol, Liana Heberer and two others. The UW lists four prep standouts as signed, including Lesle Gallimore and Kellie Welch. The defending National Champion Falcon women announced a class of seven, including Megan Lindsay and Taylor Sawyer.

Most clubs will regroup this spring for practice and local matches before fall training begins in August.

Dawgs bite back, Falcons roll

It was a good weekend for the University of Washington soccer teams.

Raphael Cox netted the overtime winner as the men beat San Diego State 2-1 on Sunday. In Seattle the UW women edged #13 Cal 3-2 on two late goals by Veronica Perez.

On Saturday the Seattle Pacific Falcon women blasted Northwest Nazarene 6-0.

Redhawks stepping up this season

So far, so good for the Seattle University Redhawks Men's and Women's soccer clubs as they step up this season to play mainly NCAA Division One schools.

After primarily Division One schedules, the Redhawks Women are Win-5 Lose-3 Draw-2 while the Men are W-6 L-2 D-1 (not counting a exhibition loss to the Washington Huskies).

These are remarkable numbers given that the Redhawks have played a combined 17 road matches and only two at Championship Field on the Capitol Hill campus.

The men will be home this Saturday October 4th at noon to play Cal-State Bakersfield. The Women host Eastern Washington on Sunday October 5th at 1:00 PM at Championship Field.

UW Daily: Women’s soccer treads difficult road

Senior midfielder Jenna Robinson helps set up flags to protect the field from geese after practice Tuesday. The women’s soccer team heads south this weekend to face the Oregon schools.

It has been a gigantic turn-around season for the Washington Women. A program on the outs in recent years ran up victories in their non-conference matches to start the season.

Now comes the hardest part: winning in the Pac-10 and getting into the NCAA's.

In today's UW Daily Honsen Lin takes a look at the challenges ahead for the Huskies.

“In comparison to the other big conferences, it’s intense; it’s intense all the way through,” freshman goalkeeper Kari Davidson said.

Gallimore said that in any given week, many Pac-10 teams are ranked among the top few teams in the country.

“We do see a lot of girls who have a lot of speed and a lot of great skills that a lot of conferences and other teams do not have,” said senior defender Dana Stirn. “So it’s a big difference going from some of our non-conference games, which have been less challenging, to playing girls who are on the national team.”

Girl Power
Women's college soccer around the Sound is having another banner year. Up in Bellingham the Western Washington Vikings are ranked 13th in the country. The Viks edged Central recently as this coverage from the Herald shows.

The Seattle Pacific Falcons are ranked 6th in the nation.

In South Sound the Loggers of UPS, currently ranked 4th in all of Division 3, keep cruising along, reports the Tacoma Weekly.

Over the Mountains the Washington State Cougars are having another excellent, ranked campaign.

 

Huskies impressing at MLS Combine

George John and Raphael Cox are both getting serious second and third looks at the Major League Soccer Combine taking place right now in Florida. With two days gone and one more to impress on Tuesday John and Cox are getting positive comments from combine attendees.

"George John - Again reading very well and his passing is great. He had meniscus surgery that ended his college season a little while ago and considering is moving very well. I only sense the slightest hesitation against wanting to run flat out. Great conversion to center back from holding mid going on here."

"Raphael Cox - Looking sharper. Moving well. A diagonal running type. Not as much upside as some others."

Today's exhibition match between the Seattle University Redhawks and Seattle Sounders has been moved to Starfire Sports Complex at 3:00 PM.

We've completed our "Local Match Calendar" updates for the Fall by adding home dates for Washington, Seattle University and Seattle Pacific Men and Women.

Soccer fans will have over 50 chances to see high level soccer over the next four months. Along with seven home matches down the stretch for the United Soccer Leagues Division One Seattle Sounders, there will be home matches for NCAA Division One Washington, and a smaller slate for NCAA Division One-transitioning Seattle University. The Seattle Pacific Falcons host a whopping 20 home matches this Fall at Interbay; 12 for the Women and 8 for the Men.

The local college home calendar kicks off on Friday, August 22 at 7:00 PM at Husky Soccer Field when the UW Huskies host Seattle University in what will be a preview of what promises to become a hotly contested cross-town Division One derby in the coming years.

In Puget Sound community college soccer action the season rolls out on August 29th.

Seattle-area action kicks off September 5th when Highline hosts Tacoma at 4:00 PM.

If you add in the community college matches you could spend almost every day between now and November watching soccer.

That's what I call the SOUND of soccer!
