Whitecaps want up to MLS
Perhaps Sounders FC will only have to wait 2 seasons for a regional rival. It might be their biggest historic rival of all, too.
Today the Vancouver Whitecaps made months of speculation crystal clear when they released a statement declaring their pursuit of a Major League Soccer franchise for the 2011 season. The Whitecaps are scheduled to move into a remodeled BC Place that same year.
Officially on board in the ownership group is NBA star Steve Nash. “I am really excited to be a part of the Whitecaps organization and play a role in our application to join Major League Soccer," said Nash. "This new partnership is a great fit for me. My passion for soccer and commitment to the community is well aligned with the Whitecaps vision.”
Major League Soccer announced the next round of expansion for 2011 would include two new clubs. The top candidates at this time appear to be Vancouver, Montreal, St. Louis and Portland, in that order.
The Portland Timbers are expected to launch their own MLS drive in the coming weeks.
